Custom Curtains vs Ready Made Curtains: Which Is Better Value?

Custom Curtains vs Ready Made Curtains: Which Is Better Value?

July 27, 2026
When you start shopping for window treatments, the first fork in the road is almost always the same. Do you grab a pair of ready made panels online and hang them this weekend, or do you measure your windows and order custom curtains made to fit? The answer is not simply "custom is better" or "ready made is cheaper". Value depends on your windows, how long you plan to stay, and what you count as a cost.
This guide breaks down both options across the factors that actually affect your wallet and your living room.

What Ready Made Curtains Offer

Ready made curtains are pre stitched panels sold in standard widths and lengths. You find them in home stores, marketplaces, and many online retailers.
Where they win
  • Lower sticker price per panel
  • Ships fast, sometimes same day
  • No waiting for production
  • Good enough for rentals, spare rooms, or temporary fixes
Where they fall short
  • Only come in fixed sizes, usually 40 to 54 inches wide and 63 to 96 inches long
  • Non standard windows mean you hem, widen, or accept gaps and pooling
  • Fabric choice is whatever the warehouse stocked
  • Header style is fixed, usually grommet or rod pocket
  • Lining options are limited to what the factory added
  • Cheaper panels often skip pre shrinking and heat setting, so they wrinkle and fade faster
If your window is a plain 120 by 240 centimeter rectangle and you plan to move in 12 months, ready made is hard to beat on speed and price.

What Custom Curtains Offer

Custom curtains are made to your measurements using the fabric, header, lining, and fullness you pick. Homerilla and similar made to measure brands build each panel after you place the order.
Where they win
  • Exact width and drop, measured off your actual track or rod
  • Full control of fabric, from linen blends to faux cashmere like our Bram line
  • Choose pleat style, fullness ratio, lining type, and side finish
  • Better long term look because fabric is pre shrunk and heat set in the making
  • Works on floor to ceiling windows, bay windows, corner spans, and S fold tracks
Where they ask more of you
  • Higher upfront spend per meter than a discount panel
  • Production lead time before shipping
  • You supply accurate measurements or arrange someone local to measure

The Real Price Is Not the Tag

The biggest mistake in this comparison is looking only at the number on the product page. Ready made looks cheap until you add the hidden line items.
Cost factor
Ready made
Custom (Homerilla model)
Panel price
Low
Higher per meter
Rods and tracks
Separate purchase
Separate purchase, Ripple fold includes track
Rings and hooks
Sometimes included, often not
Rings with curtains, hooks with tracks, extra only if unusual pleats
Making up labor
Already done, but cannot change
Included in curtain price, no extra hemming fee
Lining choice
Fixed by factory
Selected in order flow, pay material only
Alterations
Hemming or widening paid locally
None needed, made to size
Shipping
Varies
Standard free, express paid
Replacements in 3 years
Likely if cheap fabric fades
Less likely due to stable blend fabrics
A 30 dollar ready made pair that needs hemming, a new track, and replacement in two years can quietly pass the price of one well made custom panel that still looks right in five.

Fabric Quality and Certification

Ready made racks are dominated by thin polyesters and unlabeled blends. That is fine for a backdrop, less fine for a nursery. Custom channels let you specify OEKO TEX Standard 100 certified cloth, which is what every Homerilla fabric carries. The certification matters because dyes, anti static agents, and finishing chemicals are tested for harmful limits regardless of fiber origin. Faux cashmere, linen blends, and cotton mix panels can all meet that bar when the maker bothers to test. Ready made lines rarely show the certificate number.

How Homerilla Fits the Picture

Our model removes several custom curtain pain points without going full showroom.
Curtains ship without rods, but we sell rods and tracks in the same order, and S fold systems arrive with their matching track. Rings come with curtains, hooks come with tracks. Labor for pleating, hemming, and side finishing is inside the fabric price, not a surprise invoice. Linings are picked during ordering, no handling surcharge. Standard delivery is free, express is optional. We do not send installers, so you hire a local pro on your terms.
That structure keeps the custom route comparable to mid range ready made once you total the real basket, especially on non standard windows.
