Custom Curtain Budget Planning: What's Reasonable and What Hidden Costs to Watch For
Every time someone starts decorating or redecorating, the same questions come up: "How much should I realistically spend on custom curtains?" and "Are there hidden costs I'm not seeing in the quote?"
At Homerilla, we believe in transparent pricing and informed decisions. Let's break it all down clearly, without throwing around specific numbers.
What Determines a Reasonable Budget?
There is no single answer. It mainly depends on three factors: fabric selection, window size including fullness ratio, and whether you need additional features like linings or special headers.
Fabric Is the Core Driver
Pure linen or 100% natural fibers sit at the higher end. They offer unmatched texture and breathability, but raw material scarcity and complex processing drive up the cost.
Linen blends or polyester blend fabrics offer better value. Many people worry when they hear "blend," but they shouldn't. Adding polyester makes the fabric more stable, less prone to shrinking, more colorfast, and more wrinkle resistant. Most households find that blends strike the right balance between looks and durability.
Specialty fabrics such as heavy velvet, multi layer blackout, or embroidered weaves cost more than standard blends.
Coverage Determines Quantity
Custom curtains are not priced simply by window width. You pay for fullness ratio, typically 1.6 to 2.5 times the rod width, to achieve those elegant folds. Floor to ceiling windows or extra wide spans will naturally push the budget higher.
Added Features Add Value
Blackout linings, thermal interlinings, pinch pleats, and motorized compatibility all improve performance and experience. Expect the budget to reflect those upgrades.
For most households, the safest middle ground is certified blend fabrics with standard linings and classic headers. This avoids both overspending on luxury and buying disposable quality.
Hidden Cost Checklist: Ask Before You Commit
Many seemingly cheap quotes only show the price per meter of fabric. The following items are often charged separately. Here is how Homerilla handles each one.
1. Track and Rod Systems
Curtains do not hang in midair. Aluminum tracks, silent glide systems, motorized tracks, decorative rods, and Roman rods are all separate line items in many shops.
With Homerilla: Our curtains do not come with rods or tracks by default. You purchase them separately. We also sell a range of rods and tracks so you can order everything together.
⚠️ Exception: Ripple Fold curtains are a complete system. The curtain includes its matching track, so no separate purchase is needed.
2. Hardware and Accessories
Hooks, gliders, rings, finials, brackets, weights, and pleating tape. Individually they seem inexpensive, but across an entire home they add up.
With Homerilla: We include curtain rings with your curtains and hooks with your tracks at no extra charge. Standard quantities are covered.
If your curtain requires an unusually large number of pleats or non standard spacing, you may need to purchase extra track hooks separately. We will inform you in advance.
3. Making Up and Labor Charges
Cutting and sewing are not always included in the fabric price. Some vendors charge per meter or per panel for pleating, hemming, or pattern matching.
With Homerilla: All labor is included in the curtain price. Whether you choose grommets, pinch pleats, pencil pleats, or rod pocket style, the price you see covers both fabric and workmanship. No extra fees.
4. Linings and Interlinings
Fabric quotes often cover the face fabric only. Blackout linings or thermal interlinings are typically charged separately.
With Homerilla: Adding a lining or choosing which type of lining is part of your customization flow. You select it yourself during ordering. There is no extra handling fee or surcharge. You only pay for the lining material itself, clearly shown.
5. Measuring and Installation Fees
Physical stores may charge for onsite measuring, delivery, professional installation, and sometimes even a "high floor surcharge" or "irregular window fee."
With Homerilla:
-
Delivery: We offer free standard shipping. If you need it faster, you can upgrade to express delivery.
-
Installation: We do not have our own installation team. Please arrange a local installer yourself. This gives you flexibility to choose someone you trust at a price you negotiate. Once your curtains arrive, finding a local handyman for installation is usually quick and affordable.
6. Upgrade Traps
During consultations, some salespeople push "upgrades" such as antibacterial coatings, decorative trims, valances, tiebacks, or premium packaging.
With Homerilla: All options are presented clearly in your customization flow. You choose based on your needs and taste. No one will pitch hidden upgrade packages after you place your order. What you select is what you get, and the price is clear from the start.
Homerilla's Commitment: Certified, Transparent, Family Safe
At Homerilla, all our fabrics are OEKO TEX Standard 100 certified. They have been tested against a comprehensive list of harmful substances. Whether you choose a light linen sheer or a substantial blend, safety is never a concern, especially in nurseries and bedrooms where air quality matters most.
The polyester content in our blends is not a cost cutting compromise. It is a deliberate choice to make curtains more stable, more fade resistant, and more practical for everyday life.
We sell directly from our factory to you, removing middleman markups. Every cost is listed clearly: fabric, header style, lining option, and shipping. No hidden accessory bundles, no surprise installation fees.
Final Thoughts
A reasonable custom curtain budget balances fabric quality, necessary functionality, and transparent service fees. Pure linen is beautiful but expensive. Blends containing polyester offer both good looks and great value. As for hidden costs, they are only hidden when nobody tells you about them. At Homerilla, we want you to know exactly where every dollar goes, so you can furnish your home with confidence.
