Blackout Curtains Buying Guide: Light Levels, Lining Types, and How Homerilla Does It
Search for "blackout curtains" and you get a wall of panels all claiming 100 percent darkness. The truth is more layered. Blackout is not one product, it is a range of fabric constructions, and picking the wrong one means either a bedroom that still glows at noon or a living room that feels like a cave at breakfast. This guide explains the levels, the mechanics, and the three ways Homerilla approaches light blocking so you can match the window to the sleep schedule.
Light Blocking Levels in Plain Terms
Industry testing separates curtain opacity into four bands. The numbers describe how much visible light the fabric itself stops, not counting gaps at the edges.

Sheer (0 to 15 percent): Softens glare, keeps the room bright, zero privacy at night.

Light filtering (40 to 70 percent): Tone down harsh sun, keep ambient daylight, common for living rooms and kitchens.

Room darkening (80 to 95 percent): Dim enough for naps and lazy mornings, faint glow may remain at edges.

Blackout (99 to 100 percent): Near total darkness through the fabric. True pitch black also needs side channels or overlapping panels to kill edge leak.
A bedroom used by a shift worker or a toddler needs the last band. A living room almost never does.
How Blackout Actually Works: Three Mechanisms
Coated backing. A resin, acrylic, or foam layer is bonded to the back of a decorative cloth. Three pass coatings (white, black, white) reach 100 percent opacity in any front color. Downside: the coating can stiffen the drape, and cheap PVC backed versions may off gas and crack under years of UV.
Triple weave. Black yarn is woven between two outer layers of colored yarn. No chemical backing, softer hand, machine washable, but typical blockage lands at 85 to 95 percent, not true blackout in pale colors.
Dense woven face fabric. Heavy chenille, high thread count polyester, or jacquard with an integrated opaque weft can block significant light on their own, especially in darker tones, without any separate lining.
A blackout lining sits in the first or third bucket. It is either a coated sheet sewn behind your face fabric or a non coated high density woven cloth that does the job without foam.
Why Coated Linings Worry People, and What Non Coated Solves
The complaint about traditional blackout is real. Sunlight heats the coating, PVC or urethane films can release volatile compounds, and after a few summers the backing flakes, turns sticky, or cracks. That is why "non coated blackout lining" is now a searched phrase of its own.
A non coated lining uses tight weave and weighted yarn density to stop light. No foam to peel, no plastic smell, sunlight does not melt or shatter it, and it survives repeated washing. The tradeoff is that pale colors in woven lining block slightly less than a triple pass foam, so most makers pair it with a medium to dark face fabric for bedroom grade results.
Homerilla's Three Blackout Paths

Path 1: Add a non coated blackout lining to any drape
Your face fabric (linen blend, Bram faux cashmere, Lille sheer excluded) ships with an optional non coated blackout lining. It is a densely woven polyester based cloth with no acrylic foam, no PVC, no rubberized film. Sunlight sitting on it for years will not make it brittle, will not shed black bits onto the sill, will not develop that vinyl odor. The lining carries OEKO TEX Standard 100 certification, meaning the base cloth, dyes, and finishing agents are tested for formaldehyde, heavy metals, banned azo dyes, and phthalates.
This path suits people who love a specific face texture (say Bram's diamond weave) but still want nursery grade darkness behind it.
Path 2: Pick a face fabric that is already dense
Some Homerilla fabrics block most light on their own because of weight and weave structure.

Simon Chenille and Seren Chenille: Chenille's pile and tight ground weave give a heavy, opaque panel. On their own they land in the room darkening to near blackout range depending on color depth. Add the lining and they close the last few percent.

Kapor Blackout: Named for the job. Built as a high density woven face with a dark core yarn, it reaches blackout levels without a separate liner.
These are the choices when you want one panel, one weight, no extra layer sewn inside.
Path 3: Face fabric with an integrated blackout layer
Windsor Jacquard weaves a blackout weft directly into the jacquard structure. The decorative pattern sits on the room side, the light killing layer is part of the same cloth. You get the raised jacquard look and blackout performance in a single fabric, no coating, no separate lining to delaminate.
How to Judge a Blackout Claim Before You Buy
Flashlight test. Press a lit phone torch against the back of the fabric. Room darkening shows a clear halo. True blackout shows almost nothing.
Read the construction line, not the title. "100 percent blackout" in a product name means nothing. "3 pass coated", "triple weave with black core", or "integrated blackout weft" tells you the mechanism.
Check edge strategy. Even a perfect blackout panel leaks a halo at the sides and top if the rod is narrow and the curtain stops at the frame. Extend the rod 10 to 15 centimeters past each side, mount it high, and overlap panels in the center. Care Notes by Type
Non coated lined drapes: wash gentle, line dry, do not tumble. The lining will not crack because there is no foam to crack.
Windsor Jacquard and Kapor: woven blackout means normal curtain washing, no special rules.
Avoid any blackout panel that warns "do not fold sharply" or "coating may transfer". That warning is the tell of a foam backed cloth. None of the three Homerilla paths carry it.
